MODERN FARMHOUSE

This renovation transformed a three-bedroom single-family house into a spacious four-bedroom contemporary home complete with guest house, grounds and a pool. Situated on a long and narrow piece of land with challenging building set-back lines, a stepped layout was used to expand the home and maintain zoning compliance.

Central to the remodel design was the conversion of an existing garage into an owner’s suite and the construction of a new detached garage housing three car bays on the first level and a vaulted gaming and theatre space on the second. The structure connects to the main house with a second-floor bridge which creates a covered breezeway below.

Design elements used in this contemporary transformation included the changing of exterior materials to a combination of thin stone veneer, board and batten siding with farmhouse style windows and grilles. Construction of a new large scale turned gable over the existing main roof of the house allowed for a more balanced overall design, better integration of the garage massing and detailing while appropriately up-scaling the main house from that of the new garage.
